The cold, silent loneliness of this image triggerd the thought and the poem. Photographer unknown.

You can hear the poem on the album: The Little Things Big Things.
The Video (mp4) version is here:

Gone

A contemplation of a future time when Humankind has run its course and the Earth carries on without us and without any memory of us.

This was written as simply a poem and I decided to speak it over music rather than sing it. The music I used was the already-published “Peace be with You” that can be found on the Polarity album.

Finally, this poem is best heard/felt via its video.

Gone

A grand, weather-worn evergreen stands tall at the edge of a clearing
The air is still and cold. It is gently snowing
Behind, the land falls away. Grey guardian mountains rise far beyond
The silence is pure. No man is or will ever come around

A small creature digs in silence beneath its branches
The sky is a close, moving curtain of grey cloaked dancers
Did a bird just pass or did something fall to the ground?
The peace is pure. No man is or will ever come around

This tree has stood through many winters as a sentinel on this hilltop
Years pass but are not counted. Time has come to a stop.
Summer was and will return. It may even bring fire from beyond.
No one has been here in millennia. We are all gone.

This tree replaced another that fell long ago
These forest soldiers come and go as easily as melting snow
A solemn rhythm of replacement for seeming eternity
There’s no tomorrow, no yesterday. Only this moment’s calamity

Ocean winds blow, a trillion waves wash the rocks and sand
For thousands of years, man’s been gone from all the land
Still, billowing white clouds rise high in the sky turning black
Nature carries on unseen, perhaps knowing - we won’t be back.

Your grandmother had a grandmother you never knew
The grandson of you grandson will not know you
But you will make a tasty breakfast today anyway
And you intend to dress to the nines today

Did you expect more than this while you were in this place?
Picasso, Shakespeare, Ghandi and you will all be erased
Was relevance something to which you aspired?
In your absence, the tree stands silent until it too is retired.

Earth would like to thank you for dropping by.
Perhaps you enjoyed the show. Did you learn that to live, you must die?
Hopefully, you found out how to enjoy love once bitten
You were part of a story that will cannot ever be written.

Feel very fortunate that you had a moment to be alive
For it was all here bathed in silence and peace before you arrived
And it will remain here long after every trace of you is gone
And it was all never about you. You are not the One.
