Lady Liberty outside the Barra Shopping Center in Rio.

Juliana

This song is on the album: What’s the Point?

The ParadIse of CONSUMPTION

I got this phrase on day in conversation with Juliana. I had never heard it before but, it’s perfect.

In Rio de Janeiro, there is a big shopping Mall and Lady Liberty stands at the front entrance to invite you in - to shop and shop and shop. A search of this statue in Wikipedia tells you that there are Lady Liberty statues all around the World - often at shopping malls. It then occurs to me that she stands in New York Harbor at the entrance to one of the greatest shopping malls of the World - the USA.

The song rants against materialism. Buy my songs!

Am                   Am
Glorious Lady Liberty welcomes you
            Adim                 D7
At the gateway to the shining Mall
“Please come in. Entry’s free!
Everything’s here so, have a ball!”

The Guardian of Freedom she is
The freedom to have anything, if you want it
It’s all here, beyond your needs
Excess is good. She wants to see you flaunt it.

She has redefined “whole.” Just for you.

Instrumental Verse

She doesn’t care who you are
If you’re a beggar with no stuff.
She really doesn’t care who you are!
Unless you give her money but, you’ll never have enough.

Welcome to the Paradise of Consumption.
Welcome to the crushing of your soul
Don’t worry about a little thing like that,
She has redefined “whole.” Just for her.
