You will find “once in a while” on the “this is love” album

Once in a While

This song was one of my early ones. It is a sentimental, sober, not light-heated expression of that side of a love relationship. You know... when you have failed to lighten up. The lyrics list lots of the unpleasant things that can (will?) go on between two people but other words say, "it's OK. We are strong"  The instrumental and two layers of instrument throughout are simply guitars fed through a blender to make them sound like - not guitars. A fascinating thing about music is that the four main chords of the verse (C  Am  Em  G) are the same progression as the Beatles' "She Loves You." Different key. Cadence means everything, it seems.

Once in a While

C            Am            Em            G x2

C             Am                Em               G
I put my hand to the side of your face
C                     Am          Em      G
You put your hand on top of mine
A tear from your eye leaves a trace
You look at me and say, “I’m fine”

You rest your head on my chest
Close your eyes and dream away
These are the times that I feel blessed
There are no words we need to say        C7

F                 G                Am
Once in a while, we cry
F                  G                        Am
Once in a while, we lie
F                 G                    Am
Once in a while is fine you see
F                Em                                    G7
If all the while, you’re with me

There have been days as dark as night
Feelings get buried a mile deep
There are days when nothing goes right
Days when you want nothing but sleep

There are times when we wonder why
Everything rushes in a furied rage
There are reasons to ask why we try
Are we free or trapped in a cage

Once in a while, we try
Once in a while, we fly
Once in a while is fine by me
If all the while, we a  re free

Once in a while, we will see
Once in a while is all we need
Once in a while comes frequently
So all the while, stay with me
