Been there, done that
This is my retirement song written in 2014 about a year before the actual fact. I could smell it coming! All of the lines express how I feel about having worked forever and how I feel about what’s next.
My good friend, the President of the company listened to it back then and said, “But you do care!” I did not respond except to smile. I care only for the young folks that I worked with. I stick around for them to the degree that they ask. Otherwise, it is a gift (literally) to be able to pay attention to some other very important things in life. Things I could not find enough time for while employed.
Been There, Done That
G Em
I’ve been working all my life
G Em
Working for the Man
G Em
Spent more than forty years
A D
Working someone else’s plan
I hardly took a holiday
I never thought of who I am
Never grew my own garden
Just a servant to the Man
Bm G
I’ve been there and I’ve done that
Bm G
Now I'm so outa there
Bm G
I’m sitting down and lying back
A D
From now on, I don't care
I got to earn a few spare buck
I tried to make a difference
Once in a while it worked just fine
But now I'm tired, indifferent
I stare out the window a lot
Yearning for something new
If I’ll be known for only this
I will call me a fool
Chorus
That was then, this is now
Now, my time is mine
I got my garden, my guitar
And I’ll be just fine
Chorus x 3
